Edward I of England shows the court his infant son Edward (later Edward II), the first Prince of Wales.

The independence of Wales came to an end in 1282 when Edward I of England led an army into the principality. Summoning the representatives of the subdued people, the king, it is said, promised them a prince who was a Welshman by birth, and who could speak no other language. Then, he showed his infant son Edward (shown in this illustration), who had been born at Carnarvon. Young Edward (later Edward II) was the first Prince of Wales.
