View E from Workway Drove track of Knap Hill Neolithic causewayed enclosure on a rounded hill overlooking the Vale of Pewsey (to R), Wiltshire, England, UK. A 4th millennium BC roughly oval earthwork enclosure formed by external ditches with causeways & a bank with matching gaps. Based on finds at other causewayed camps (stone axes & pottery etc. from distant parts of Britain), they are considered to be seasonal (late autumn) meeting-places for widely spaced populations: signs of magic, ritual, feasting, burial, trade, exchange, animal husbandry & processing; possibly also human sacrifice, infanticide & cannibalism. The Tan Hill Way runs from front R through dip centre rear.
