Herdark hair, which is brushed tidily back from her forehead, is confined to herhead by a narrow yellow kerchief. The figure is in strong effect of light fromthe upper right and in contrast against a ([uiet sky and a simple landscapebeyond, suggesting willow trees on the right, with an expanse of sunlit cloudsin the upj)er left and a broken hillside forming the horizon below. On the left, seated on the grassy bank among theflowers, is a shepherd in red cap playing on a pipe, and at some distance infront of him a white goat stands, head erect, as if listening to the music. Thesunlight, diffused by a thin stratum of clouds which covers the sky, falls the landscape, accentuates here and there the trunks of the trees, theflowering i)lants, the irregularities of the ground and the foliage, and with analmost imperceptible warm haze modifies the tones of the v^erdure, diminishesthe intensity of the contrasts of light and shadows, and harmonizes the wholecomposition.
