These drawings, as already noted, show veryplainly the peculiar carriage of the body in walking which the ladiesof Basel adopted in Holbeins day, with the back hollowed so thatthe lower part of the figure was thrust forward, in a very ugly fashionto modern eyes, but no doubt necessary to some extent owing tothe length of the dress in front, which had always to be held up byone hand. There is a very beautiful costume study in the Library at Dessau,1which is closely allied to the Basel series. It is an exceedinglygraceful rendering of a fair lady in an elaborate
