View of an agricultural holding with the old farmhouse and various abandoned and dilapidated service buildings. Here we are in Viterbese (Maremma Laziale) in central Italy. High population density, thousands of years of agricultural and zootechnical activity, and livestock breeding have strongly conditioned and transformed the Italian territory for a long time. In non-urbanised areas, the agricultural landscape has replaced the natural landscape almost everywhere. Then in the 20th century, the growth of cities and the depopulation of the countryside, the transition from rural to urban lifestyles, caused another great environmental transformation with social, economic, ecological and cultural repercussions.
