His companies included at different times Robinson Thwaites and Co, Thwaites and Carbutt and Thwaites Brothers. In partnership with Edward Carbutt in 1862 and later in 1880 as Thwaites Brothers, his companies acquired a reputation for its machinery used in the manufacture of iron and in steel using the Bessemer process.
