Elbow flexion and extension. Illustration of two of the muscles of the upper arm, showing their function when flexing and extending the arm at the elbow. The main muscles involved in elbow flexion are the brachialis of the elbow, the brachioradialis of the forearm, and the biceps brachii of the upper arm. The two upper arm muscles shown here are the biceps brachii (used for arm flexion) and the triceps brachii (used for arm extension). The upper arm bone (humerus) and the lower arm bones (ulna and radius) are also shown, along with the wrist and hand bones.
