Jetsun Milarepa, one of Tibet's most famous yogis and spiritual poets, is a major figure in the history of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. He lived during the so-called second dissemination of Buddhism in Tibet (10th-12th century), where he introduced tantric texts and oral instructions from the Bengali siddha tradition. Milarepa spent most of his adult life practicing meditation in seclusion and teaching groups of disciples mainly through spontaneous songs of realization.
