Volunteer firefighters in blue uniforms with peaked caps, gathered for a civic ceremony, enjoy the music of Jihočeští Rodáci (South Bohemian Natives), a brass band playing and singing traditional folk songs from a trailer stage in the main square of Rožmberk nad Vltavou, South Bohemia, Czechia / Czech Republic, a small historic town on the River Vltava, about 120 miles (194 km) south of Prague.
Rožmberk nad Vltavou, South Bohemia, Czechia / Czech Republic: volunteer firefighters in blue uniforms with peaked caps, gathered for a civic ceremony, enjoy the music of Jihočeští Rodáci (South Bohemian Natives), a brass band playing and singing traditional folk songs from a trailer stage in the main square of this small historic town on the River Vltava, about 120 miles (194 km) south of Prague. The part-time firemen belong to the Volunteer Fire Brigade Přízeř, which originated in neighbouring Horní Jílovice. In 1922, local farmers formed a part-time brigade to protect lives and property in the surrounding villages. They bought an Austrian horse-drawn pump, practiced together every Sunday and used church bells to sound the alarm. During World War II, the men were temporarily replaced by female volunteers. The brigade, based around Rožmberk, deals with fires, flooding, storms, winter snow disasters and road traffic accidents. Joining them at the ceremony in September 2007 were their Austrian counterparts from the area around Freistadt, Rozmberk’s twin town on the other side of the international border. Jihočeští Rodáci uses brass and woodwind instruments to play popular traditional Czech folk songs, describing the music as: “the legacy of their ancestors in South Bohemia … the lovely sounds of the marching band as their grandfathers and fathers played it.”
