Aneurysm. Coloured angiogram of an aneurysm, irregularly shaped deep orange area at lower centre, seen distorting the left ventricle of the heart. Aneurysms are abnormal dilations which most often occur in arteries; they are caused by the pressure of blood flowing through a weakened area. The weakening may be due to disease, injury or a congenital defect. Aneurysms developing in the heart wall (here), may be due to weakening of the heart muscle following a myocardial infarction (heart attack). The cylindrical feature at top is the aorta and the body of the left ventricle is at centre right (light orange). A catheter is seen as a narrow tube at centre.
