Protesters from 'Anonymous' an Internet-based group against the Church of Scientology opposite its centre in Tottenham Court Rd
In January 2008, the Church of Scientology (CoS) tried to remove from the Internet an interview made for them by Hollywood actor Tom Cruise, and Project Chanology was set up on 16 January to oppose this removal. Andrew Morton in 'Tom Cruise: An Unauthorised Biography' has alleged that Cruise is second in command of the CoS. The CoS is alleged to have a so-called 'fair game' policy which justifies personal attacks on its critics. To avoid retaliation those behind Project Chanology call themselves 'Anonymous,' and the London demonstration was one of over 50 protests in cities around the world in which those taking part mostly hid their identity behind masks. Many favoured that used in the Warner Bros film ‘V for Vendetta’, with some also togged up in the matching wig and hat etc. There were perhaps 4-500 in a peaceful demonstration at Blackfriars, and many of them went on to a second demonstration held later in the day opposite the Dianetics & Scientology Life Improvement Centre in Tottenham Court Road.
