OMETIMES it is an extremely easy matter tomake a good photograph of a Hving specimenof a butterfly, while again, upon the other hand,it may turn out to be one of the most difficultlittle tricks in the entire range of zoophotog-raphy. As a rule, it is the rarest exception to secure usefuland pleasing pictures of this kind when dead butterflies areselected as subjects; indeed, in many cases it proves to be moretrying to pose a dead and limp specimen than it is to go prop-erly to work and make an exposure upon a living one in oneof its natural attitudes. Personally, except in very few in-stances, I shun such material for my purpose and use onlygood, vigorous, and absolutely perfect butterflies. As I say,there are exceptions to this, as when one receives a dead speci-men of great rarity, and it is essential to preserve a photo-graph of it for scientific purposes or for preservation.
