Apparently not drawn by Burgmair. fools cap with the bell at the peak, denoting his profession, is perceivedhanging on his left shoulder; and on the breast-plate, crossing the chestof the horse, is Burgmairs mark. 300 WOOD ENGEAVING The figure on page 299 of a horseman, bearing the banner of Bur-gundy, is from the cut numbered 74. The drawing both of rider and horseis extremely unlike the style of Burgmair as displayed in those cutswhich contain his mark. Burgmairs men are generally stout, and theirattitudes free ; and they all appear to sit well on horseback. The presentlean, lanky figure, who rides a horse that seems admirably suited to him,cannot have been designed by Burgmair, unless he was accustomed todesign in two styles which were the very opposites of each other; theone distinguished by the freedom and the boldness of the drawing, thestoutness of the men, and the bulky form of the horses introduced; andthe other remarkable for laboured and stiff drawing, gaunt and mea
