A forerunner of the modern motor car – an illustration of a 16th c type of wind-propelled carriage. Prior to the advent of steam traction in the 19th century, evidence dating from the sixth century AD shows the many attempts to create an automotive or self-propelled vehicle. Though wind-powered carriage designs featured strongly, there is a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci of a purely mechanical device. Today's modern wind-powered sports vehicles such as 'land yachts' have either three or four wheels and use a very efficient sail design.
