The managementhad been for some time considering the enlargement of the old building, which hadbecome so overcrowded that adjoining buildings and floors of nearby oftice buildings hadbeen leased to take care of the army of oflicers and employes, and after the fire effortswere made to secure a larger ground area upon whicii to put up a modern office building. This land was eventually secured at the northwest corner of Charles and BaltimoreStreets, in the very center of the city, where a magnificent building is in course of con-struction and will be completed about the first of July, this year. This building willcost .fl ,.500,000, and will be the largest office building in Baltimore and perhaps thelargest and best equipped building to be used entirely for railroad purposes in the country. The population of the in 1904 was 541,000; in 1905 it was 550,000, and thecensus the Police Department is now making for the use of the Health Department andfor consideration in the construction of the new sewers, it is thought, will show a popu-lation of 560,000. The direct result of the fire has been the authorization by the people of the follow-ing loans—§6,000,000 dock loan, 810,000,000 sewer loan, S2,000,000 annex improve-ment l
