This aerial photograph shows Fort Jefferson, a huge coastal fortification built from 1846-1876 with 16 million handmade bricks on a shallow island of the Dry Tortugas, which are outermost of the Florida Keys in Florida, USA. Located 68 miles (109 kilometers) west of the Key West, the historic six-sided structure covers 11 acres ( hectares) and is considered the largest brick building in the Western Hemisphere. The openings in its walls were gun ports for cannons that once protected American shipping in the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. The fort is now a National Monument.
