. This is a painting of coral growing at the Houtman Abrolhos islands, off the west coast of Australia. The coral was identified at the time as Madrepora, but this name was previously applied to virtually any hard coral. As currently circumscribed, the genus Madrepora does not occur at the Houtman Abrolhos. Saville-Kent visited the Houtman Abrolhos in July and August 1894. This painting was probably executed then, although it is possible that it was completed at a later date. It was certainly completed before Saville-Kent's death in William Saville-Kent (1845-1908) 286 Houtman Abrolhos
