Charles Wardell Stiles (1867-1941), US parasitologist. Stiles studied in the USA (Wesleyan University), France and Germany, obtaining his doctorate at Leipzig under parasitologist Rudolf Leuckart. Stiles also studied and worked at the Institut Pasteur. On his return to the USA, he taught in universities while also working as a zoologist for the US Department of Agriculture (1891 to 1902). He then worked for nearly 30 years for the US Public Health and Marine Hospital Service. His major work was on hookworm parasitic diseases and their eradication. This work led to him being awarded the Public Welfare Medal (1921) by the National Academy of Sciences.
