Containers of regular (left) and low-sodium salt. Common salt (sodium chloride) is implicated in raised blood pressure if too much is consumed. This is due to the effect of the sodium ions. Low-Sodium salt contains a proportion of potassium chloride, here 50%. Because potassium chloride is less salty' and can have a bitter, metallic taste, some products include the protein thaumatin at about one part per million.
