In Ortalis the front is quite prominent, the chpeus is greatlydeveloped, the opening of the mouth wide, and the proboscismuch thickened. This genus comprises variou-sl^ banded andspotted flies, which may be seen walking along leaves vibratingtheir wings. They feed on the loaves, and afterwards thepulpy fruit of the cherry, olive and orange. Anotlior Onion-fly, discovered by Dr. Shinier in Illinois, is the Ortalis flexa. 412 DIPTERA.
