Maoist insurgents have been terrorising Nepalis for over 10 years but Kathmandu itself and most of the Kathmandu valley have remained largely unaffected Early 2005 the king seized power from the government with the backing of the armed police in blue and army in green uniforms Their presence in the streets is noticeable but does not affect life for tourists or the large expatriate community the twin roofed temple in the background is the Char Narayan and at right the Krishna Mandir with its shikara which is influenced by the Moghal architects of India In front of these a statue of Garuda stands on a tall pillar
