Sheearly exhibited an in-tense devotion to the al-leviation of suffering,which, in 1844, led her to give attention to the j^;f^ J^-^^ii condition of visited and inspectedcivil and military hos-pitals all over Europe;and in 1851 went intotraining as a nurse. In1854 war was declaredwith Russia, and the hos-pitals on the Bosphorus Florence were crowded with sick and wounded. In this crisis Miss Nightin-gale offered to go out and organize a nursing-de-partment at Scutari. Lord Herbert accepted herservices, and she departed with thirty-four N I H I L I S T S — M P P11 247 She arrived at Constantinople November 4th, onthe eve of Inkermann, in time to receive thewounded into wards already filled with 2,300patients, and a few months after her arrivalshe had 10,000 sick men under her care. In1S55, while in the Crimea, she was prostratedwith fever, but refused to leave her post, and onher recovery remained at Scutari till Turkey wasevacuated by the British, July 28, 1856. At theclose of the Crimean War a fund of $250,000 wassubscribed for the .purpose of enabling her to forman institution for the training of nurses; this isspent in connection with St. Thomass (the Night-ingale Home) and at Kings College Hospital. In1858 she published valuable Notes on Notes on Hospitals (1859), from the clearnessof arrangement and minuteness of detail, are val-uable to the architect, the engineer and themedical officer.
