Distant view of the Magpie Mine complex near Sheldon in the English Peak District. Mining stretches back to Roman times in the area, lead ore (galena) being the main product mined. Lead was mined from this site in from the 17th century. Records from 1740 record the Magpie Mine. The mine closed in 1958 after over 200 years of being worked. It was the last working lead mine in is now managed by the Peak District Mines Historical society who have undertaken much of the restoration work. The mine has had an chequered past, including allegations of murder and a subsequent trial! It is a protected Scheduled Monument.
