Mount Etna erupting. Satellite image of plumes of smoke and ash rising from the volcano Mount Etna. Mount Etna occupies the eastern part of the Italian island of Sicily. It is the largest and most active volcano in Europe, and stands 3323 metres above sea level. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and continuously experiences minor eruptions, although this was on a larger scale. Lava flowed from fractures in the southern slope and a state of emergency was called as it headed for the nearby town of Nicolosi. Taken by the Ikonos satellite on 31 July 2001.
