The Battery left the reservecamp at p. m. and marched to Point of Rocks,reaching that place at ; after resting half anhour the march was resumed and the Appomattoxcrossed. The order had been to proceed towardsPetersburg, but a staff ofificer met the Batteryand ordered it to return to Redoubt Converse on Spring Hill, the 29thConnecticut being ordered in support. An attack was expected at anyminute and the Battery was kept harnessed up. The expected attack did not take place; the reason was known later,,when the telegraphic code used by the Confederates had been captured andthe messages intercepted. They showed that a daring attempt had beenmade to explode a mine in front of Butlers line, and, during the confusion,an attack was to take place with the object of capturing the pontoon bridgeacross the Appomattox. For some unexplained reason the mine did notexplode and the
