Some-times there is a mere simple split on one side of the mesial line—perhaps there is a trifling notch—but the edges are rolled away, theteeth are exposed, and this gives the patient a very awkward ap-pearance. The operation must be modified according to the extentof the fissure and the space between the parts of the lip. In thefirst place you are to consider at what period the operation is to beperformed; some persons say it cannot be performed too early, andmany parents are very anxious to have it performed immediatelyafter birth.
