Emin Pasha (1840-1892), German physician and explorer. Born Isaak Eduard Schnitzer, he took the name Mehmet Emin in the 1870s, and the title 'Pasha' was conferred on him in 1886. Emin, who spoke several languages, worked and travelled in Albania and the Ottoman Empire, before settling in the Egyptian province of Equatoria in what is now the Sudan, leading several expeditions. In 1878, he was appointed Bey (governor) of the province but this ended following a revolt. Emin was working for the German East Africa Company when he was murdered on an expedition. This German engraving dates from around 1880.
