Once, while sitting in the woods by the edge of astream, a young companion called my attention to anorange-colored cone about three-quarters of an inchin height protruding from a bed of green moss atmy elbow. I discovered it to be the cap of a smallmushroom, whose stem penetrated deep into the much care I succeeded in separating the moss,being curious to discover upon what the fungus hadgrown, and to my astonish-ment, when I drew it to the «, ] %;.
