Great caution should be observed in considering the char-acters of the labellum. The origin of the lateral arms follows nodefinite rule, and is more hkely to cause confusion, if relied on,than to assist in specific distinction. In my opinion H. lactiflora and H. clypeata are very closelyallied, and will be found to offer no satisfactory characters onwhich to establish two distinct species. The position of the var. buccalis, on the other hand,
