Portrait of Werner Heisenberg (1901-1976), German physicist and Nobel laureate. Heisenberg was a major creative figure in the field of quantum mechanics. His papers on matrix mechanics (non- relativistic quantum mechanics) eventually led to his 1932 Nobel Prize. He is best known, however, for his Uncertainty Principle. This states that it is impossible to determine exactly both the position and momentum of a particle at the same moment. This removed absolute 'cause and effect' from physics for the first time, replacing it with statistical probability. During WW2, Heisenberg led Hitler's A-bomb project, which he later claimed to have effectively stalled.
