The Angel of Hadley is the central character in a 17th-century legend combining the execution of Charles I in England, King Philip's War and Hadley, Massachusetts. The scene depicted shows the residents of Hadley attending service when a stranger appears telling of the imminent attack. The stranger leads a successful defense of the town and then vanishes as quickly as he had appeared, never to be seen again. Apparently none of this story is based in fact. There is no record of an Indian attack on Hadley in 1675.
