Foot and shoe X-ray, dating from 1896. The metal parts of the shoe, including the lace holes and hobnails, are visible here, as well as the bones of the foot. This X-ray was produced by Serb-US physicist and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla (1856-1943). Tesla used vacuum tubes of his own construction and the power supply was his high-voltage transformer. Tesla experimented with X-rays from 1894, around the same time as Wilhelm Rontgen's December 1895 announcement of his discovery of what were later known as X-rays.
