Mr. Abbott attended the public schools of the village duringhis youth, but began work at quite an early age, his first employ-ment being driving teams from Penacook to Concord for H. H. &J. S. Brown. He later worked in their cotton mills. After the 420 HISTORY OF PENACOOK. Harris mills were built Mr. Abbott was employed in the cardingroom for twenty-eight years. He next went to the cabinet shops,where he served a term of seventeen years mostly in teaming thefurniture to the railroad station. Since the close of the cabinetshop he has kept busy at various occupations when his healthwould permit. When a boy Mr. Abbott learned the use of the. Charles Abbott. tenor or snare drum, and soon became an expert performer onthat instrument. The first drum that he ever owned, bought in1840, has been in use for fully sixty years, and is still an excel-lent instrument. Mr. Abbott played the drum for the old linemilitia companies at musters and parades for several years beforethe old militia organization was abandoned, and has continuedplaying to the present date. He played the drum for the first B. FRANK VARNEY. 421 band, the Fisherville Brass band organized in 1845, and continuedthrough the whole life of that band. He did the same service in theFisherville Cornet band organized in 1858, and which continuedtill the summer of 1863, being then disbanded by reason of theenlistment of seven of the members in the Third Regiment band.
