The first of these three trench systems,constituting part of the Hindenburg Line proper,ran in a general north-westerly direction for a dis-tance of six miles from the Canal de IEscaut atBanteux to Havrincourt. There it turned abruptlynorth along the line of the Canal du Nord for adistance of four miles to Mocuvres, thus forminga pronounced salient in the German front.
