Originally a painting by William Henry Powell, (1823-1879), an American artist in the ilustration homes have had their roofs tumbled and a police presence is evident in the men in uniform at the left of the scene. In the foreground is the body of a man who died shortly before the eviction, carelessly thrown into the street.
