Foundations of an abandoned ante-bellum mill on the Shenandoah River, Virginius Island, Harpers Ferry National Historic Site, WV

The site of John Brown's raid in 1859, the historic town of Harpers Ferry is now owned by the National Park Service and has been restored to its ante-bellum appearance. It is managed as an open air museum, Harpers Ferry National Historic Site. Within the site is Virginius Island in the Shenandoah River, an early industrial site destroyed during the Civil War and abandoned since; the National Park Service has excavated it, and the factory foundations can be viewed. Its workers would have been enslaved.
