The oldest running Memorial Day Parade in New York marches through the upper Manhattan neighborhood of Inwood on Memorial Day Monday May 25 2009 Sailors and Marines joined local residents as they honored members of the armed forces that sacrificed their lives for the country The parade organized by the American Legion Inwood Post 581 has run for over 70 years and is the remaining Memorial Day Parade in the borough of Manhattan Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and honored the fallen in the Civil War Later is was renamed Memorial Day and expanded to encompass and honor all of those who died in service to their country Frances M Roberts
