Statue of St. Martin of Tours, Basel Munster, Basel, Switzerland

This statue of St. Martin of Tours mounted on a horse is found on the right side of the main porch of Basel Munster in Old Basel, Switzerland. The original statue was erected in 1340. It depicts an act in the life of the Roman soldier who was to become St. Martin. He was on duty on a freezing day at a Roman garrison in Armiens, France and saw a freezing beggar at the gate who was almost naked and ignored by everyone. St. Martin took his sword and cut his cloak in half, giving half to the beggar to keep him warm.
