A mother raccoon and her babies eat at a backyard wildlife feeding station, July13, 2021, in Coden, Alabama. Though raccoons are primarily nocturnal, it’s not unusual to see pregnant or nursing mothers and their young foraging for food in daylight. Common raccoons are native to North America, where they typically live in forests but have adapted to coastal and urban areas. The life expectancy for wild raccoons is 2-3 years and more than 20 years in captivity.
