Orchids are quite too patrician ever to be in large demand, and at present they hardly enter into a con- sideration of the market. Sweet peas are slowly retiring to the background. The heat hastened the departure of the winter bloomers, although quantities of short-stemmed peas still are seen. The spring bloomers are just coming in. Carnations, of course, have come into their own with the approach of Moth- ers' day. Practically all of the whole- salers are booking advance orders of more than respectable magnitude, and from present indications it is safe to say that the supply of carnations for this holiday will not .be more than enough to go around. The stiffening of prices in this line has been commen- surate with the increase in demand. With the removal of the abnormal conditions that have weighed like an incubus on the trade since Easter, there is every reason to encourage the belief that the improvement in market conditions will continue without serious interruption for, at least, a reasonable length of time. Various Notes. A fire practically destroyed the fix- tures and all of the stock in the store of Daniel Branch, 313 East Fifty-first street, April 30. Fortunately, the wind was from the south and the flames were carried away from the greenhouses, which were uninjured. It is understood that the present building is to be re- moved and a new one erected, which will be much longer and better equippe
