Bird song machine. 16th-century illustration of a machine with musical pipes being operated by a man (left) to produce the impression of bird song. This illustration is from 'Le Diverse et Artificiose Machine' (1588) by Italian engineer Agostino Ramelli (). This work contains nearly 200 designs for devices, many of them water-raising machines including water wheels, pumps, mills, fountains, and wells.
