Reiter's syndrome. Face of a man with tongue lesions due to Reiter's syndrome. This syndrome is a type of reactive arthritis, which is where joint inflammation (arthritis) is caused by a bacterial infection. In Reiter's syndrome, other body areas are affected, like the skin (including the tongue membranes), muscles and eyes. The mouth and tongue lesions usually heal after a few weeks and do not need treatment. Anti-inflammatory drugs can be taken for the joint pain. This is a rare disease, mostly affecting those whose have a tissue type that is susceptible to the disease. It is extremely rare in people of African descent. Photographed in Africa.
