Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Hymenomycetous yeast fungus (Cryptococcus festucosus). A yeast-like fungus that is encapsulated and that reproduces by budding. There are about 37 recognized species of Cryptococcus. The majority of species live in the soil and are not harmful to humans. Very common species include Cryptococcus laurentii and Cryptococcus albidus. Of all species, Cryptococcus neoformans is the major human and animal pathogen. Magnification: x2,000 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
