Lavatera is an easy to grow upright shrub which bears large attractive flowers from mid summer on wards. It will grow up to around 2m which means Lavatera is a good sized medium shrub to plant mid to back of a border, or where there is plenty of space. Lavatera is not reliably hardy in all areas and tends to short lived but makes a great addition to a border with saucer like blooms in pinks, white and purple with the added benefit that the flowers are long lasting. Dead heading will prolong flowering. Grow in light, moderately fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Shelter from cold, drying winds in frost-prone areas. Large pink Hollyhock-like blooms smother the branches from June to November, each with a pretty magenta center. Lavatera maritima (Tree mallow) - This is a large mounding evergreen fast-growing shrub that grows to 6-8 feet tall and 8-12 feet wide. The gray-green leaves are palmately lobed. The light lavender-pink flowers have lavender centers and lavender veins radiating from the centers. These flowers bloom year-round and the peak bloom period is early spring to late fall. Plant in sun or part shade, water moderately. It is hardy down to about 20 degrees F. This plant is great for a fast filler plant but usually does not last more than 5 years - for this reason we decided to discontinue growing this plant in 2013.
