High resolution mosaic of lunar south pole region, taken using a 355-mm Schmidt Cassegrain telescope from Flackwell Heath, Bucks, UK. A total of 130 separate images were used to form the mosaic on the night of 3 April 2009. North is upwards, as seen through an astronomical telescope. The dark grey area near the upper right edge is known as Mare Australe. Major craters include Maurolycus, Stöfler, Deslandres, Walter, Maginus, Regiomontanus, Purbach, Werner, Apianus, Buch, Büsching, Celsius, Aliacensis, Fernelius, Faraday, Barocius, Gemma Frisius, Goodacre, Clairaut, Breislak, Baco, Cuvier, Heraclitus, Licetus, Nasreddin, Huggins, Orontius, Manzinus, Mutus, Bogoslawsky, Schlomberger, Simpelius, Pentland and Zach.
