Scanning electron micrograph of the surface of the small intestine, showing infection with the parasitic protozoan Cryptosporidium parvum, w causes severe diarrhoea. This photograph shows a very severe infection which has resulted in the atrophy and fusion of the villi. The parasites (small round objects) are incorporated within the intestinal cells, just under the cell membrane. Different sizes represent different stages in the life cycle. Cryptosporosis commonly arises as an opportunistic infection in persons suffering from AIDS: it is the cause of death in about 10% of AIDS patients in the UK and up to 50% in Haiti and elsewhere.
