The Firmafede Fortress of Sarzana, former medieval Citadel, demolished and re-erected by Lorenzo de' Medici, Sarzana, La Spezia, Liguria, Italy

The Citadel, also called Fortress of Sarzana or Fortress Firmafede, was the first city fortification of Sarzana, built initially in 1249 with the city walls, thanks to the help of the Pisan allies of the city. In 1324 Castruccio Castracani made numerous and important changes to its defensive systems, but later the complex was destroyed by the Florentines, led by Lorenzo de' Medici, in 1487 during the War of Serrezzana. The Citadel was rebuilt on the ruins of the previous one by order of the same Lorenzo de' Medici, who made use of the work of the best Florentine military architects of the time.
