The preparation in question waslabeled Blackburns Cascara, Wild Lemon, Castor Oil Pills,Compound, and samples were subjected to analysis at thegovernment laboratory. According to the report the pillscontained calcium sulphid, capsicum, atropin (introducedprobably, in the form of belladonna extract). As to castoroil, if they contained any, it was at most a trace. As thecathartic, curative and therapeutic effects of castor oil werenaturally almost wholly absent, the use of the namecastor oil pills was unjustified and constituted Before and Aftek The Passage of the Food and Drugs Act. Blackburn pleaded guilty and paid the fine and costs ofprosecution.—[Notice of Judgment, No. 32.] Muco-Solvent This preparation was manufactured by the Muco-SolventCompany, Chicago, and the claim was made on the label thatMuco-Solvent cures croup, whooping-cough, diphtheria, allthroat troubles and catarrhal disorders. It being evident thatthe preparation would not cure the diseases nentioned on thelabel and a statement to the effect that it would, being false,misleading and deceptive within the meaning of the act, thestuff was declared misbranded.
