The cage was providedwith safety brakes or clutches, which would at once stopit in case of the breaking of the rope. These safety brakeswere automatic, and in case of their failure to work an ad-ditional^brakeTwasyprovided, which could be worked by. fig. 6 a plan. The other piers were of the same construc-tion in all respects, differing only in height. The platform at the top, upon which the workmen andmaterial were carried, was a light frame of iron, made insections for convenience of carriage, and held together bybolts. It rested upon the masonry of the pier by means offour feet, each foot consisting of a pair of hydraulic jackshaving a lift of one meter, so that the platform could al-ways be kept level. This platform or false-work is shownin figs. 14 and 15, fig. 14 being an elevation and fig. 15 aplan. It will be seen that by the aid of these jacks the
