The Delco automatic generator cut-out, Fig. 1, consistsof a voltage cpil of fine wire, one end of which isgiounded, and a current coil of heavier wire, both woundaround an iron core. An armature with contact pointsis provided so that, with sufficient current flow fromthe generator through the voltage coil, this core will bemagnetized and the contact points will close, thus com-pleting the circuit between the generator and the bat-tery. After the closing of the contact points the opera-tion of the electrical equipment is exactly similar to thepresent type of installation with the exception that asmall amount of current is flowing through the voltagecoil to ground. When a reversal of current takes placedue to stoppage, slow running, or a short circuit of thegenerator, a reversal of the magnetic flux around thecurrent coil occurs and demagnetizes the iron core. The. REAR OF SWITCH PLAN VIEWGENERATOR CUT-OUT REAR OFVOLTAGE REGULATOR armature is drawn back by the spring and the contactpoints are separated, opening the circuit from the bat-tery. The clearance between the contact points should beabout in. The voltage required for the closing ofthe contact points is regulated by the tension of a spring(shown in the wiring diagram, Fig. 2). The tension ofthis spring should be such as to allow the contact pointsto close at a potential of eight volts. If the contact points of the voltage regulator separatebefore the contact points of the automatic generatorcut-out close, then the cut-out points never will close, asthe regulator will prevent the voltage building up suffi-ciently to get enough magnetization of the cut-out coreto close the contact points. In other words, the genera-tor will not be put into the circuit at any engine speedif the voltage regulator operates before the cut-out closes. In the installation of the au
